A major bushfire has broken containment lines and is threatening properties in rugged high country near Tumut in southern NSW, adding further woes to rally competitors who have already seen fires devastate forest areas in Victoria and NSW.
With a total fire ban in force over much of NSW, authorities say the blaze burning out of control in the Bondo pine plantation, 30km north east of Tumut, is igniting spot fires ahead of its front.
The fire has burnt out about 13,000ha of pine plantation in the Bondo, Billapaloola and Buccleuch State Forests.
The Brindabella Road is closed between Piccadilly Circus and 10 km east of Tumut.
Hot weather, with temperatures in the high 30s, continues to hamper the efforts of fire fighters.
