The 15th Make Smoking History Targa West, held in and around Perth from 8th to 11th August, is Western Australia’s premier tarmac rally and much more than cars racing the clock. For drivers, there are several class options: Competition, Targa 130, Targa 165 and Electric Vehicle category. There’s still time to enter, entries close on 19 July 2019. For those wanting less commitment, there’s also the shorter and more accessible Targa 2Day category. “The Targa 2Day competition will be held on Saturday 10th August and Sunday 11th August and has been primarily set up for newcomers but also for anyone who is short of time or doesn’t want the expense of the four-day event,” Event Director Ross Tapper said. For spectators, it’s completely free and there are plenty of opportunities to watch the fast-paced action as well as check out some beautiful machines. About 50 competitors are expected to race the clock on closed-road special stages at Whiteman Park, Muchea (returns for 2019), Ellenbrook (new for 2019) Kalamunda including the infamous Zig Zag, Parkerville (new for 2019), Toodyay, Chittering and Bullsbrook before the penultimate stage in Malaga, then the finale at the City of Perth Special Stage along Riverside Drive. Make Smoking History Targa West competitors start at 30-second intervals, with the winner being the fastest over all 35 stages, a total of 260 competitive kilometres. It begins on Thursday 8th July 2019 with the ceremonial start at Forrest Place that will be awash with colour and high-octane aroma with rally cars on display before the first car is waved off at 11.15am. Competitors will make their way to Whiteman Park for four stages, then to Muchea for two stages New this year is the Thursday evening stage at Ellenbrook with the Service Park at Ellenbrook Shopping Centre. Cars will race the clock between Main Street and Mangles Drive from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and kids activities from 4.30pm. Also new this year is the technical Parkerville stage on Friday 9th August 2019. From there, drivers head to Kalamunda where the Railway Road will be closed yet alive with noise and colour, displays and music. After the lunch stop and three more stages including the infamous Zig Zag, competitors will display their pride and joys at the Northbridge Show ‘n’ Shine along James Street from 6pm to 9pm. Saturday 10th August is crunch time, when the competitors need to get down to business and finish the day well. It’s a long hard day with 13 stages and a total of 127 competitive kilometres in Toodyay, Lower Chittering and Bullsbrook. On Sunday 11th August, the Make Smoking History Targa West action starts in Malaga along closed roads in the Industrial Estate from 8.45am until 12pm before moving to the City of Perth for the short and sharp city stages. Also in the city is the Shannons Classic on the Park, a showcase of beautiful cars from yesteryear along Riverside Drive, and the Celebration of Motorsport on Langley Park which already has over 450 cars, bikes and boats registered. There’ll be action all day Sunday in the city with the LF Performance Targa City Sprint taking place concurrently, from 8.30am along Riverside Drive between Victoria Avenue and Governors Avenue. Event Director Ross Tapper said that tarmac rallying is the fastest growing and most exciting areas of motorsport. “The event program is every car-lover’s dream and there is so much happening around the competition,” says Tapper. “From high-horsepower sideways rally action to historic cars on displays and everything in between, it’s great for the whole family.” Spectating is free at Make Smoke History Targa West.
