Like many of the younger generation, Smart was introduced to rallying via video games and notes a classic Colin McRae game as his inspiration.

“It actually all started with the Dirt Rally 2 game, the 2009 version,” Smart said. “You ‘lived’ in the caravan and I thought that it (rallying) was just such an adventure. You’re driving these cars on all these different terrains, and it’s just super exciting.”

“That’s where my love for rally started. We levelled that up when we actually built our own simulator rig. We got wooden plans online, found a seat in the junkyard and built a really cool sim.”

The FIA initiative to search for rally talent across the globe from sim racing was then where Smart was then found.

He won the African section of the FIA Rally Star search and has moved on in leaps and bounds since.

Smart’s full interview is available on this week’s Special Stage Rally Podcast.
