The Australian Rally Championship has been rocked by the withdrawal of South Australia’s round of the series for 2018. The popular event, which was held in September, has always been one of the favourites of both competitors and spectators. In a statement, Rally SA organiser, Ivar Stanelis, said: “This week I advised the SA Rally Panel and CAMS that we won't be running the local Rally SA event in 2018. We've been running this event in its various guises since 2001 and in that time we've seen everything from World Rally Cars to the latest AP4 spec ARC cars compete for glory. “We've loved running this event, but like all good things they eventually have to come to an end. The organising committee thought it best to go out on a high and with the great success of our 17th event this year the time is right. We also wanted to notify everyone ourselves. “We will still be running our other event, the AGL Rally SA – Rally of the Heartland, in the Burra region in 2018 and we look forward to seeing everyone there on the first weekend of June.” It appears the decision by Rally SA has delayed the imminent release of the 2018 ARC calendar, which will feature a new event in Coffs Harbour that will also run in conjunction with Australia’s round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship. There is also the possibility of a new ARC round in Tasmania. - Peter Whitten
