The Tasmanian Rally Series returned to the forests behind Wynyard on July 10 for the running of the North West Car Club Warf Hotel Hellyer Rally.

Twenty-four entries lined up in wet and windy conditions. Nine Stages  were completed on the day with first place going to current state champions  Lynn Rattray and Lindon Hills in their 2009  Pirtek / Skilled Subaru Impreza STI.

Thirty-three seconds back in second place were Hobart competitors David Waldon and David Catt  in another Subaru, with a further 18 seconds back to Jamie and Simon Vandenberg (Lancer) making a welcome return to the gravel.

First place two wheel drive was taken out  by the Hobart team of  Lee Peterson and James Booker in a Nissan Sunny GTi, followed by StephenTurner/Anna Fittler (Falcon XR6).

New young gun Kade Barrett and experienced bavigator David Weldon put together a brilliant drive in their Lancer hatch to finish first in the club event, and eighth outright on the day.

The event saw a new breed of young drivers and navigators competing, who placed themselves extremely well against more  experienced crews.

The next round is to held in the Huon Forest, south of Hobart, in late August.
