Retrospective: When Dunko’s good deed went unrewarded

It’s 30 years ago that Ross Dunkerton sensationally withdrew from the Malaysian Rally Championship, just months after sitting out a rally to help his main rival’s chances of victory.

In his monthly Australian Rallysport News column, Dunkerton explained the circumstances behind both events.

It was far from being a case of 'one good deed deserves another'. Driving for Mitsubishi, his withdrawal was to aid the chances of fellow manufacturer, Proton, remaining in the championship the following season.

However, what appeared to be some dirty tactics in an event the following year soon had the Aussie packing his bags and returning home for good.
