After 11 years of successful championship rallying in which their premier formula was Super 2000, the 2017 South African series will be based on two-wheel drive R2 cars.
S2000 cars will no longer be eligible for South African Championship events.The final S2000 event was the Hallspeed Rally in Brokhorstspruit, which was won by Luke Botha in a Fiesta S2000.
Turbocharged R5 cars were never admitted into South African championship rallying and new generation R2T cars will likewise not be admitted.
In a complete change for a country traditionally famous for long distance rallying, the 2017 South African series will restrict the lengths of events, for cost-cutting reasons.
