Another South American country is making a bid to host a round of the World Rally Championship.
The President of the Republic, Mario Abdo BenÃtez, has announced his support for a claim of the Paraguayan Touring and Automobile Club for his country’s candidacy for the WRC.
Paraguay has for many years been highly active in rallying, notably by running the annual Trans Chaco off road event in which lightly modified rally cars are used in the desert lands in the north of the country.
In recent years Paraguay has also held qualifying rounds of the FIA’s Codasur regional rally championship on orthodox format events, run for cars complying with Appendix J rules rather than special Maxi Rally formula, as in Argentina.
In 2019 Paraguayan drivers filled the top four places in the Codasur series, the champion being Alejandro Galanti in a locally developed Toyota Etios R5, who won the title by one point.
Drivers from Paraguay have been FIA Codasur champions for the last nine seasons.
