Rumours in the motoring press this week that Les Walkden is trying to lure the Asia Pacific Rally Championship round to Tasmania in 2008 have been denied by event officials.

A report on www.carsales.com.au this week said that “support for the Asia-Pacific round has dwindled in Canberra and we hear suggestions of a plan to switch it to Tasmania from next year”.

However an event spokesman told RallySport Magazine today that this was definitely not the case.

“We have heard the rumours too, but we have definitely not had negotiations with anybody about it,” the spokesman said.

Walkden and his team are currently preparing for September’s Rallye Burnie tarmac event, and so committed is Walkden to that event, and Rally Tasmania (which runs in February), that he has bought a building in Burnie which is currently being renovated to house the rally office, and the command centre during the event.

The future of the Rally of Canberra, which is being run this weekend as a round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship, is currently unknown.
