Driver Mick Gillett and co-driver Harvey Smith will spearhead Hyundai’s assault on the 2008 one make Race Brakes NSW Hyundai Excel Rally Series at Taree on August 23. Team Hyundai Rallye will return to Taree for the Manning Valley Rally in the hope of changing the team’s fortunes in 2008.
The team last competed at Taree in 2006, winning the Hyundai Excel class, which then gave them a solid start to an eventual Championship by the end of 2006 rally season.
The team have been thorough in their preparation after an electrical connector let the team down at Lithgow back in May. They then competed at Port Macquarie on the June long weekend where
heavy rain leading up to the event made road conditions difficult to read.
“It was like playing in the mud as a kid. We certainly had some fun and a few laughs but it didn’t help our result. An uphill section in Stage 3 saw us in first gear for more than 300 metres", said Gillett.
Gillett’s Hyundai was also featured at the recent Auto Equip Expo at Sydney’s Darling Harbour where Hyundai promoted the importance of use of Hyundai Genuine Parts to the accident repair and mechanical repair industry. With many hours spent preparing the car for the expo following the Port Macquarie mud bath, some new paint by Cauldwell Auto Body Repairs and matching stickers by Motographics, the team is more then ready for a good performance at Taree at the weekend.
Team Hyundai Rallye will be joined by eight other Hyundai Excels at Taree with series leader Glenn Farrant and new Excel competitor Stephen Horobin, who are likely to be the pace setters, and the return of “Crazy” Dave Roberts to the mix, will make for an exciting Manning Valley Rally.
With almost forty Hyundais competing across Australia in State-based One Make rally series',
Hyundai is showing the way forward with affordable technology in Australia’s toughest proving
ground - rallying.
