The Brakes Direct Border Ranges Rally has been won by Matt van Tuinen and Erin Kelly driving a Subaru Impreza WRX Sti 4WD, over Ian Menzies and Robert McGowan in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 6, by just one second.
Third outright, in what has to be the drive of the rally, was John Spencer and young son, Lochlan, in a classic 2WD Nissan 240RS.
Timothy Wilkins and Denis Neagle won the Gary Motorsport Tyres NSW Rally Championship section of the rally in their Nissan Silvia S15 2WD. Matt van Tuinen won the Hankook Tyre Queensland Rally Championship component.
Queensland won the NSW verses Queensland Border Shield. The rally “Origin” fight for the flag has begun.
Two competitive stages of the rally were lost on Sunday and the schedule severely disrupted when a crew had to be air lifted from the scene for precautionary measures after an accident. Both crew members, although sore and bruised, are reported to be quite okay.
Clerk of the Course, Stephen Davies, said: “We introduced a new locally designed tracking system called Rallysafe for this event. When a car abruptly stops because of an impact the system activates a signal that locates the crew.
“We had a team of medics on the scene within minutes to assess the situation. Unfortunately for the big crowd of spectators who attended, there was a big delay, however, safety is our highest priority.”
Rally organisers, the Gold Tweed Motorsporting Club Inc, thanks the community for the support and is looking forward to coming back in 2015.
