The deal has been put together by RSPORT Motorsport, the Australian importer of the exciting Ford Fiesta R2.
Evans, from Wales, will compete in the event ahead of starting his 2013 World Rally Championship program, the prize he won for taking the World Rally Championship Academy title last year. Evans will be looking for a competitive run in the Fiesta R2 in the notoriously difficult Canberra based event.
“When I was approached to do the event I jumped at it. I want to be a professional rally driver, so an opportunity to gain international experience like this is valuable," Evans said.
"My employer, M-Sport, thought it was a good idea for my development and a break from our winter is an added bonus, but I am taking the event seriously as the team is looking for a result for all the work putting a deal like this together takes.
"I have heard the roads are tricky and knowing when to push and when to ease off a bit is important, and that I can expect temperatures in the mid-thirties, so it isn’t going to be a holiday,” Evans said.
Adrian Coppin from Innate Motorsport said he was pleased to have Evans in the team.
“The opportunity to run Elfyn cements our place as a serious part of the Australian rally community. I met him when I was in the UK last year and had a ride with him. He has the speed to be a serious contender in Canberra,” Coppin said.
A spokesman for RSPORT Motorsport added: “We want to showcase the capabilities of the Ford Fiesta R2 and Evans should be able to do that.
"The rally has traditionally been a challenging event held in the spiritual home of special stage rallying in Australia. International drivers have competed here in the past so it seemed fitting to invite Elfyn to compete, and I couldn’t think of a better event to show what the R2 can do.
"He has plenty of experience in the car and there is no doubting his obvious talent. It will be interesting to see where he finishes. I am sure spectators will be impressed by his speed and the Fiesta R2’s capabilities.”
