Former Australian Rally Champions, Geoff Portman and Ross Runnalls, have teamed up to contest the Nat Cap Rally in Canberra on November 25 in a Nissan Stanza.

The pair will wheel out one of Darren Snooks’ Stanzas that have proved so competitive over recent months, and have joined the growing number of crews likely to contest the Classic category which has been added to the program.

The Nat Cap comes just one month after Rally Australia where Portman will be competing in a feature race, and shortly after Victoria’s Yackerboo Rally in which Portman and Runnalls will also be competing.

Portman told RallySport Magazine that he was looking forward to his Canberra drive and to putting in a good result in the Stanza. “I’d like to think we could be at the pointy end of the field in the Classics and perhaps even up near the front in the overall placings.

The Portman/Runnalls partnership is one of the longest in modern rallying history and which was forged when both were completing their Forestry courses at Creswick, near Ballarat, in the 1970s. They won the Australian Rally Championship title in 1981 and 1982, and performed a trifecta by winning the Australian Rally Championship, the Victorian Rally Championship and the Victorian Trials Championship in the same year.

As well as having years of experience in Australia, Portman also competed in Malaysia in the 1990s in both a Toyota Celica 4WD and a Laser TX3 4WD.
