The rich history of the Australian Safari continues to evolve with major changes being announced for the 21st running of the classic motorsport endurance event in August 2008.

The event will now be known as the Australasian Safari, and while it will still be based in the vast wilderness of Western Australia, it will provide a more concentrated course in the Goldfields, Gascoyne and Coral Coast regions of the state.

The changes have been designed to enhance the competitor experience and to attract overseas guests to one of the greatest off-road rallies in the world.

Event Director, Justin Hunt, is sure that the new format will further build the already formidable reputation of the Australasian Safari.

“Western Australia proved to be an awesome location for the rally, but the experience gained in 2007 means that we can design an event with even greater appeal for 2008,” Hunt said.

“The course will see more competitive kilometres, with less liaison between stages, and this is a very important element of the re-design.

“There is no doubt that in 2008 the competition stages will be longer and even more technical.

“The course will also offer a greater navigational challenge for crews. Competitor feedback is that they really love this element of the event, so we’ve come up with a route that will meet that need.

“While there will be some marathon days, logistically the event will be a lot easier for drivers and their service crews. There will be easier servicing requirements with greater control of refuelling, and several times where we are all in the same town for more than one night.

“It all adds up to a really exciting combination that will ensure the event goes from strength to strength in its new West Australian base,” Hunt said.

The ceremonial start will take place on Wednesday August 23 in Kalgoorlie, with the field arriving at the finish in Perth on Saturday August 30.
