Team Subway Woolgoolga, Mark Beard/Jim Gleeson, are looking forward to their 'local' event in the Australian Classic Rally Challenge, the Coffs Harbour based WRC Rally Australia from 12 - 15 September.
Beard is currently lying in second outright in the Driver pointscore of the Australian Classic Rally Challenge while co-driver Jim Gleeson currently leads the Co-Driver pointscore after the first four rounds.
The pair are one of only two crews who have competed in each round of the Australian Rally Championship Classic class this year. The team has been very busy rebuilding the little Datsun 1200 engine after it expired on the last stage of the International Rally of Queensland and the crew only just made it over the finish ramp! There is still more work to do but the team are confident they will join the WRC, ARC and Classic teams at the Rally Australia start on Thursday 12 September, albeit in probably the smallest and least powerful car in the event!!
Beard says his aim is really to have fun at his home event, thank the locals for supporting his Woolgoolga businesses (Woolgoolga Subway and Caltex Woolgoolga Service Centre) and his other sponsor, Edge Panel and Paint Coffs Harbour, and to also fly the flag for the Coffs Coast. The team realise that they must finish each day of this endurance event to score as many points as possible as the Classics only recognise the best four scores of the six events in the Championship at the end of the year.Â
Regardless of the series points though, Beard says it’s also a wonderful thrill to just be competing on the great roads of this World Championship Rally along with the best rally drivers in the world and all the atmosphere that goes hand and hand with that!
