Rally world mourns Colin McRae

The rally world is in mourning following news of the death of 1995 World Rally Champion, Colin McRae, in a helicopter crash near his Lanarkshire (Scotland) home, late yesterday afternoon.

It is understood four people were aboard the helicopter with no-one surviving the accident. McRae and his five year old son, Johnny, are thought to have been aboard the helicopter with another adult and child.

McRae's agent confirmed he was piloting the helicopter at the time of the accident, however police are yet to release the names of those killed.  An eyewitness was quoted as saying the helicopter burst into a fireball as it crashed to the ground.

Police have cordoned off the area surrounding the scene of the accident, which occurred less than a mile from McRae's home.

39 year old Colin McRae, an accomplished helicopter pilot who regularly flew his Twin Squirrel chopper around the UK and Europe, is survived by wife Alison, and nine year old daughter, Hollie.
