This weekend’s Newmont Boddington Gold Rally is a new event to the WA Rally Championship (WARC), but it will be somewhat of a drive down memory lane for the Busselton Rally Sport team.
The event’s stages will be run over former Rally Australia roads and include the famous jumps and water splash.
Leigh Hynes has a lot of experience over those stages as a five-time Rally Australia starter.
The pine plantation roads were also where he and co-driver Stuart Percival first competed together in former WARC round, the Sotico Safari Rally.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to where we started,” a reflective Hynes said.
The talented driver, who’s still on a high from winning the Trade Hire Donnelly Rally two weeks ago, said he will be driving for the win in Boddington.
With such a short time between WARC rounds, it’s good news that the Busselton Rally Sport team’s Subaru WRX is in good shape.
Hynes said the car would have some preventative maintenance and the setup would be adjusted for the spectacular jumps of the Newmont Boddington Gold Rally.
“We’ll run the car a bit higher and a bit stiffer,” he said.
He joked that he was not looking forward to the jumps: “You know the smart thing to do is not jump hard, you should pace yourself. But it’s a jump and you want to get air.”
Spectators are expected to flock to the Newmont Boddington Gold Rally and Hynes and Percival will be amongst the most spectacular competitors to watch.
The Busselton Rally Sport team is supported by WA Freemasons who share the team’s enthusiasm for courage and perseverance.
